Day 6 in Alaska- All Aboard!

After leaving Chena, Brian and I headed back to Fairbanks to watch the Alaska Railroad train leave Fairbanks at 8:15am (which means we had to leave Chena no later than 7am). We had previously decided to pick up gifts for the kids during our trip, and with Connor's current fascination with Thomas the Tank Engine, an Alaska model train seemed like a no-brainer.

However, the only way to obtain a metal Alaska train is at one of the five train depots. Trust us... we looked at several other locations to no avail.

Inside the depot at Fairbanks they had the gift shop, but also a model train area set up where you could watch the several trains chugging along various Alaskan landscapes.

I had to take a picture of one of the conductors as well. Thought Connor might appreciate that.

And skipping ahead several hours, we also got to see the Alaska Railway train depart from Denali at 4pm.

Hopefully these pictures bring a little joy to those captivated by trains. And on a side note, after purchasing and opening the toy trains, we found that they were made in China. Just had to laugh.
