This year the Texas State fair celebrated 125 years and it is the largest state fair in the United States. Again... not surprising... everything is bigger in Texas. And to prove that point, the icon of the Texas State Fair is Big Tex, a 52ft stature who welcomes visitors into one of the gates at Fair Park.
While we were here we also checked out some of the new cars for 2012, and other cars that we'll never be able to afford.
Others we wouldn't have stood a chance getting even inside them. So Sophie stood outside the ropes and posed for the picture.
Next, Sophie got to learn about what a farmer does at Little Hands on the Farm. She got to see what the animals eat and what each animal produces (eggs, milk, wool).
Uncle Gerald & Richard.... she's READY!
After she had collected her farm goods, she got a dollar to spend at their little general store. She thought the effort was well worth the bag of Cheetos she purchased with her money.
Next, we went to Jump! The Ultimate Stunt Dog show where watch dog's catch frisbees, do flips, race over hurdles, and plunge into water. Sophie really enjoyed that.
Around lunch time we stopped by the Food & Fiber Pavillion, where Sophie and I learned about the production of honey and got to see some live bees. And we got to meet Elsie & Beauregard (the calf), who are the spokes-cows from Borden Dairy. (At least they'll be the spokescows as long as they keep producing milk, once they stop, they might become the spokescows for an all beef patty on a sesame seed bun).
For lunch we had packed PB&J and snacks... but when you are at a fair it's a bit hard to resist the fried food. And we didn't.
They advertised for just about fried anything....
... We ate fried buffalo chicken in a pancake (maple syrup on the side) , fried moon pie, and the ever safe item- a large corn dog.
Afterwards, we spent some time watching the Kildare's play. This was probably my favorite part.
In case you haven't heard of them, here is a video of them performing.
And here is a video of Sophie dancing, while they are playing.
Afterward we stopped by the Greenhouse on the Midway. Mom would have loved it because they had guest speakers from Southern Living going over their plant collection and designing your yard... Southern Living style. We mostly went for the pumpkin painting, but we arrived too late... or too early... however you want to look at it from a scheduling point of view.
Since we missed out on the pumpkin painting, Brian took Sophie on the 1914 merry-go-round. Wisely, they sat on the bench.
By the time we were all done, it was about 4pm (and we probably could have stayed longer had I not been so exhausted). And after about 5 minutes in the car, Sophie was asleep.
Overall, great family outing with lots to do, but lots of people there. Thank goodness we bought and brought a wagon.
